t the event, we talked about, surprisingly enough, AI and how to adopt new HR tech. It was a great event, and one of the highlights was Thomas Otter—who writes an excellent newsletter on Substack—speaking about what’s next.

On the 5th of March, I’ll be speaking at HR Tech in Amsterdam, and I hope to see as many of you there as possible!

Also next Friday, I’m hosting a free session around the EU AI Act (It’s in Swedish).
I’ll be focusing specifically on the AI literacy aspect, which ties directly into this article.

But enough about all of this – let’s get to it!

The best day to start upskilling your AI skills was yesterday; the second-best day is today. And the amount of free resources around this topic is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because, well, it’s free and a curse because free doesn’t always equal good and it’s also sometimes hard to know where to start.
The aim with this article is to give you a kind of learning journey towards upskilling your AI knowledge - for free.

Even if this is free, I know a lot of organizations that struggles with getting this off the ground. And an easy way to get it up and running is to bring me in to help you do that. A learning program for HR on these matters is a cheap and easy way to get this going —drop your details here and I’ll help you create a curriculum that upskills your team.

But if that’s not an option—this article aims to help you with pointing you in the right direction and the thinking here is that I’ll lay them out in a logical order, so if you’re going through the full curriculum from top to bottom, you’ll have a solid foundation to build upon.

If you follow this roadmap, it should keep you busy for at least +40 hours and give you the understanding and tools necessary to not only understand what’s going on but also utilising the tools.

The Foundation

Elements of AI

I’ve talked about this course before, but it remains valid and valuable: Elements of AI. It provides a solid foundation, covering not only generative AI but AI as a whole. It’s free and accessible. While it can get a bit technical at times, it’s absolutely worth it.

AI for Everyone

This is a beginner-friendly course by Andrew Ng, one of the most prominent figures in AI. It provides an accessible, non-technical introduction to AI and its applications in business. Perfect for HR professionals looking to understand AI’s potential in their field, it covers key concepts and ideas without overwhelming technical details.

GenAI

This isn’t a course, but it’s a must-watch: The Conspiracy to Make AI Seem Harder Than It Is by Gustav Söderström, the co-CEO of Spotify. I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s such a good overview of generative AI models and their operations. It’s concise, non-technical, and provides a great understanding of the current limitations of these models.

Prompting

I’ve created a free course on how to prompt tools like Copilot or ChatGPT for those working in the HR space. Sign up, complete the course, and earn a certificate at the end. (Yay!)

If you need help with prompts or inspiration, here’s one great resource to get you started:

Copilot Chat

Many people are using Copilot these days. I’ve been considering creating specific videos about Copilot, but then I discovered Lisa. Lisa is fantastic, and her latest video about Copilot Chat is highly recommended if you’re working with Copilot.

Microsoft’s AI Learning Hub

Microsoft, unsurprisingly, has a great learning hub on AI that is completely free. While it’s biased towards Copilot rather than ChatGPT, the content is practical and concrete. I haven’t taken all their courses (their offering is vast), but the ones I’ve completed have been excellent.

GenAI Tools

The last tip here is don’t forget to use ChatGPT or Copilot as your tutor! They are great at teaching you almost any topic and you can customise them teach you in a way that suits you.
A great prompt I use almost daily is: “Act as a knowledgeable and very pedagogic teacher. Teach me how XYZ works and explain the background of ABC.”

And that’s it! As mentioned at the beginning, the main issue isn’t the lack of resources—there are more free ones than you can count—but rather figuring out which ones are worthwhile. I hope this helps you a bit and gets you started
